Highcross Leicester has transformed its 24-hour corridor near St Peter’s Square with a new street art installation celebrating the people, communities and cultural events that have helped shape the city.
The large-scale mural has been created in collaboration with Leicester-based street art organisation Graffwerk and spans around 120 metres in length and three metres in height.
The artwork features a range of figures connected to Leicester’s cultural, sporting and community life, including Sir David Attenborough, Sue Townsend, Mahalia, Rakhee Thakrar, Sergio Pizzorno, Professor Ivan Browne, Elvy Morton and Laurel Aitken.
It also recognises the city’s major sporting institutions, including Leicester City Football Club and Leicester Tigers, alongside cultural events such as Diwali, Vaisakhi and Leicester Caribbean Carnival.
The installation follows an earlier Highcross and Graffwerk collaboration, which saw artist Wing Lo create a mural inspired by Leicester’s music scene.
Michelle Menezes, Centre Director at Highcross Leicester, said the latest project was designed to reflect the identity and diversity of the city.
She said: “Following the success of previous installations, we’re proud to once again work with local artists and organisations to transform our spaces in a way that reflects the people and communities that make up the city.
“This installation is all about celebrating identity, pride and connection.”
Izzy Peacock, Creative Director of Graffwerk, said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to work with Highcross to deliver a mural celebration of Leicester.
“It’s always great to add colour to otherwise plain walls and even better when we can partner with organisations who feel the same.”
The mural is now on display in the 24-hour corridor near St Peter’s Square.
