Visitors to Highcross Leicester are invited to celebrate Diwali with a free day of creativity on 7 November, from 11am to 5pm, with a range of activities inspired by the festival of light.
At the heart of this year's celebration will be a towering three metre-wide giant Rangoli colouring wall, inviting visitors to add their own splash of colour to a collaborative artwork. Traditionally, Rangoli designs are created using colourful patterns to decorate homes and welcome good fortune, particularly during Diwali.
Highcross’ installation, which is taking place in East Square near Luke 1977 and Damaged Society, will offer visitors the opportunity to put their own stamp on the design, helping to bring the colourful display to life. When finished, it will be on permanent display in Highcross throughout November.
Visitors can also get creative by making a charm bracelet to gift to a friend or family member. Inspired by Diwali’s spirit of generosity and sharing, the free activity offers a chance to create a personal keepsake for someone special.
Diwali, celebrated by millions of people around the world, is often known as the festival of light and is associated with themes of hope, new beginnings and the triumph of light over darkness.
Michelle Menezes, Centre Director at Highcross Leicester, said:
“Leicester is a city shaped by its many cultures and communities, and celebrations like Diwali are a wonderful opportunity to come together and share in the traditions that make our city so special.
“We hope our free activities will bring people together to celebrate in the festival of light and enjoy everything our diverse city has to offer.”
